This historical novel is set against the brilliant brocaded back-cloth of T'ang Dynasty China, when an emperor, the so-called "Magnificent Monarch", lost his throne through neglect of his empire for his favourite, the notorious Lady Yang Kuei-fei.
During the rebellion they fled together, but on "Ghost Horse Hill", which gives its name to the book, Lady Yang was tragically killed by the discontented soldiery. After prolonged anarchy and bloodshed, the dynasty was finally restored by the eldest son of the emperor.
The events are seen mainly through the eyes of the heroine of this story, Winter Cherry, one of the "palace girls" of the emperor, and of her lover, a nephew of Li Po, greatest of Chinese poets. Behind the story of their simple love and its happy development, we glimpse the greater events of Chinese history.
