It is set in thirteenth century China when the Sung dynasty was falling into decadence and there was much major corruption and disorder in the empire. It tells the stories of 36 major and 72 minor characters, who are referred to as outlaws, brigands, bandits, robbers – and yet heroes.
They were bandits: they robbed, they plundered, and they killed. And yet they were heroes in that they were brave and skillful warriors, with their own code of honor. In nearly every case, it was injustice or official corruption, which drove them from lawful society to the outlaw refuge of Liang Shan Po, a high mountain in Shantung, set in a lake surrounded by marshes.
