Canon John Hayter was educated at Lancing College, St Edmund Hall, Oxford and Westcott House, Cambridge. It was at Lancing that he became convinced of a call to the ministry and in particular, to service overseas. After serving his curacy at Ramsey Abbey John Hayter went out to Singapore. It is with his experiences there that this book mainly deals and especially his experiences in the notorious Changi Gaol, hence the books title.
