Having successfully escaped from the Moro pirates in The Sultan of the Sulu Sea, the two Wallace boys and Singaporeans, Kheng Peng and Zainal, face a severe storm in the South China Sea which blows the yacht, the Silver Spray, off course close to the distant coast of Vietnam.
The boys sight a Mekong River Delta sampan adrift, and aboard they find a young Vietnamese man who has a strange, horrifying story to tell. This leads to an offer of help to search for an American missing since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.
